Content Writer Jamie C. Dickson inserts an envelope into a 5 ft, red and gold decorative mailbox that says "Santa's Mail.

Text on the photo reads, "5 holiday content ideas for your small business."

Holiday Content Creation Tip: Keep It Light

First, remember: Your content should achieve these 4 objectives:

  1. Attract, engage, and retain your community.
  2. Enhance brand visibility and boost awareness.
  3. Establish your expertise and authority.
  4. Keep your business top-of-mind when it’s time to buy.

Will every piece of content you create achieve these goals? No! But a thoughtful content strategy will incorporate each.

So – here’s the big mistake I see business owners and podcasters make around the holidays: they keep it “business as usual” and forget their potential clients and customers are likely … not.

You know your people best, but I’m willing to bet that after a day of Christmas chaos, they don’t want to read your top 10 tips for organizing a walk-in closet or a sales pitch on your latest social media course.

They probably want a gift recommendation for their picky sister-in-law or a peek inside your holiday home. (They’re super nosey, after all).

This is why I always recommend my clients keep it merry, bright, and light during the holiday season.

Does this mean you can’t sell your product or service? Of course not. A soft CTA at the end of a blog post, email, or social media post is a great way to sell what you offer without a hard sales pitch.
Now, let’s get to what you came here for! Here are holiday content ideas to help you connect with your audience this holiday season and beyond.

Share your top 3-5 moments from 2023

Use this to showcase who you helped and how you grew.

But don’t forget to keep it light! Try to throw in a few humorous moments as well.

Share Your Business-Themed Holiday Wish List

You can go any direction with this, but I suggest, again, keeping it light.

Here’s what I would include in my wish list:

  1. A full day of work without interruptions from my kids.
  2. A 100 percent email open rate.
  3. A roster full of dream clients.
  4. A weekend getaway with my biz buddies.
  5. A day without spam DMs.
  6. A time-traveling device to prevent that embarrassing email typo that went out to my 200+ list of subscribers
  7. Noise-canceling headphones to mute the sound of awkward small talk during networking events.

What would you add to your list? DM me on IG and let me know!

Thank Your Community

Use this as an opportunity to do some serious storytelling and thank the clients/customers, colleagues, and community members who supported and encouraged you throughout the year.

Write About a Favorite Holiday Tradition

This is a great place to start if you want to connect with your community this holiday season.

Share a favorite holiday tradition, recipe, memory, movie, song, etc., and ask your followers or subscribers to do the same.

(h2) Write About the Charitable Organization(s) You Supported in 2023

Use this to showcase your brand values by sharing about a non-profit you worked with this year.

You could also introduce a charity you plan to work with next year.

Share Your List of New Year’s Resolutions, Goals, or Your “Word of the Year”

This isn’t a new idea, but I enjoy this type of content as it can hit all the objectives mentioned in the tip above (especially when the content creator has a humorous take.)

Share your 2024 “WON’T” Do List

Flip the “New Year’s Resolution” post, and share a list of boundaries or things you won’t do in 2024.

Show Off Your Team – Holiday Edition

Re-introduce your team to your community by sharing their favorite holiday traditions, movies, songs, etc.

Share A Holiday Workspace Photo Dump

Do you decorate your office (or home office) for the holidays? Show off how you decorate your office for the holidays, and tell a story about a special ornament or decoration.

Spotlight Local Businesses

If you serve your local community, share your holiday must-stops. Where do you go for your coffee break or to grab a last-minute side for your holiday party? Let your community know!
